GonewiththeWindstandsasaromanticmonumenttotheOldSouth--anhomagetoaneraandalifestylelonggone.Theopeningtitlestates:"TherewasalandofCavaliersandCottonFieldscalledtheOldSouth.Hereinthisprettyworld,Gallantrytookitslastbow.HerewasthelastevertobeseenofKnightsandtheirLadiesFair,ofMasterandofSlave.Lookforitonlyinbooks,foritisnomorethanadreamremembered,aCivilizationgonewiththewind."Thisclearlyillustrateswherethefilm'ssympathieslies,anditisn'twiththeoften-grimplightoftheslaves(infact,slaveryislargelytreatedasaneutral,orevenbenevolent,institution).
