Methods:Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedthemechanismoftheinfluenceofself-esteemonmobilephoneaddictionamong694collegestudentsusingtheSelf-EsteemScale,theMobilePhone.AddictionScale,thePeerRelationshipScaleandtheSocialAvoidanceandDistressScale.
Results:Theresultsshowedthat(1)self-esteemsignificantlyandnegativelypredictedmobilephoneaddiction;(2)self-esteeminfluencedmobilephoneaddictionthroughthemediatingeffectofsocialavoidance;(3)self-esteeminfluencedmobilephoneaddictionthroughthemediatingeffectofpeerrelationships;and(4)socialavoidanceandpeerrelationshipsplayedachainmediatingroleintheinfluenceofself-esteemonmobilephoneaddiction.
Discussion:Thesefindingscanhelpresearchersandeducatorsbetterunderstandtheunderlyingmechanismsoftherelationshipbetweenself-esteemandmobilephoneaddictionandtoprovidepracticalandeffectiveoperationalsuggestionsforthepreventionandinterventionofmobilephoneaddictionamongcollegestudents.

H3:Peerrelationshipsmediatetherelationshipbetweenself-esteemandmobilephoneaddiction.

Thisstudyconstructedachainmediationmodeltoexaminetheinfluenceofself-esteemonmobilephoneaddictionandthemediatingroleofsocialavoidanceandpeerrelationshipsbetweenthetwoincollegestudents,inordertoprovidenewideasformobilephoneaddictionpreventionandinterventionamongcollegestudents.
Theissueofcommonmethodbiasmayarisewhendataarecollectedusingtheself-reportmethod.ThecommonmethodbiastestwasconductedusingtheHarmansinglefactortest.Theresultsshowedthattherewereeightprincipalcomponentswitheigenvaluesgreaterthanone,andthefirstprincipalcomponentexplained34%ofthevariance,whichwasbelowthecriticalcriterionof40%.Therefore,thereisnoseriouscommonmethodbiasinthisstudy.
Thisstudystillhaslimitations.First,thesamplewaslimitedbythesourceofcross-sectionaldata,andremainedinadequateintermsofconfirmatoryinferencesaboutthecausalityofvariables.Second,selectionbiasandpotentialthreatsmayexistinthecaseofconveniencesampling.Finally,thequestionnairewasconductedwithoutinterventionduetotimeconstraints.Therefore,aspartoffutureresearch,follow-upstudiesshouldbedesignedandimplementedusingmultipledatacollectionmethods.Longitudinalstudiesshouldbeconductedafterthequestionnaireshavebeenadministered.Futurestudiescanuselongitudinaldatatoverifythecausalrelationshipsofthevariablesofinterest.
