Throughhisfiercedignityandunbendingwilltosacrificehisownfreedomforthefreedomofothers,MadibatransformedSouthAfrica--andmovedallofus.HisjourneyfromaprisonertoaPresidentembodiedthepromisethathumanbeings--andcountries--canchangeforthebetter.Hiscommitmenttotransferpowerandreconcilewiththosewhojailedhimsetanexamplethatallhumanityshouldaspireto,whetherinthelivesofnationsorourownpersonallives.Andthefactthathediditallwithgraceandgoodhumor,andanabilitytoacknowledgehisownimperfections,onlymakesthemanthatmuchmoreremarkable.Asheoncesaid,"Iamnotasaint,unlessyouthinkofasaintasasinnerwhokeepsontrying."
IamoneofthecountlessmillionswhodrewinspirationfromNelsonMandelaslife.Myveryfirstpoliticalaction,thefirstthingIeverdidthatinvolvedanissueorapolicyorpolitics,wasaprotestagainstapartheid.Istudiedhiswordsandhiswritings.Thedaythathewasreleasedfromprisongavemeasenseofwhathumanbeingscandowhentheyreguidedbytheirhopesandnotbytheirfears.Andlikesomanyaroundtheglobe,IcannotfullyimaginemyownlifewithouttheexamplethatNelsonMandelaset,andsolongasIliveIwilldowhatIcantolearnfromhim.
ToGraaMachelandhisfamily,MichelleandIextendourdeepestsympathyandgratitudefor

EarthDayoriginatedfromAmerica.OnApril22nd,1970,USDemocraticSenatorGaylordNelson,andastudentfromHarvardUniversity-DennisHayes,organizedanactivitynamed“EarthDay”.ManypeopleintheUSAjoinedthem.Thepurposewastocallonallthepeopletokeepourenvironmentcleanandprotectourearth.
Theearthisourcommonhome,butsomeofouractivitiescauseseriousdamagestotheearth.Now,forests,lakes,wetlandsaredisappearingatanalarmingrate;Coal,oil,gasandothernon-renewableenergysourcesfacedepletionduetoover-exploitation;Emissionsofgreenhousegasescauseglobalwarming;icecapsintheArcticandtheAntarcticaremeltingdownandsea-levelriseswhichthreatenhumansurvivalanddevelopment.

TheThanksgivingtraditionofcompassionandhumilitydatesbacktotheearliestdaysofoursociety.Andthroughtheyears,ourdeepestgratitudehasoftenbeeninspiredbythemostdifficulttimes.Almostfourcenturiesago,thepilgrimssetasidetimetothankGodaftersufferingthroughabitterwinter.GeorgeWashingtonheldThanksgivingduringatryingstayatValleyForge.AndPresidentLincolnrevivedtheThanksgivingtraditioninthemidstofacivilwar.
Thepastyearhasbroughtmanychallengestoournation,andAmericanshavemeteveryonewithenergy,optimismandfaith.Afterliftingoureconomyfromarecession,manufacturersandentrepreneursarecreatingjobsagain.Volunteersfromacrossthecountrycametogethertohelphurricanevictimsrebuild.AndwhenthechildrenofBeslan,Russiasufferedabrutalterroristattack,theworldsawAmericasgenerousheartinanoutpouringofcompassionandrelief.

Tothatworldassemblyofsovereignstates，theUnitedNations，ourlastbesthopeinanagewheretheinstrumentsofwarhavefaroutpacedtheinstrumentsofpeace，werenewourpledgeofsupport--topreventitfrombecomingmerelyaforumforinvective，tostrengthenitsshieldofthenewandtheweak，andtoenlargetheareainwhichitswritmayrun.Finally，tothosenationswhowouldmakethemselvesouradversary，weoffernotapledgebutarequest:thatbothsidesbeginanewthequestforpeace，beforethedarkpowersofdestructionunleashedbyscienceengulfallhumanityinplannedoraccidentalself-destruction.
Wedarenottemptthemwithweakness.Foronlywhenourarmsaresufficientbeyonddoubtcanwebecertainbeyonddoubtthattheywillneverbeemployed.Butneithercantwogreatandpowerfulgroupsofnationstakecomfortfromourpresentcourse--bothsidesoverburdenedbythecostofmodernweapons，bothrightlyalarmedbythesteadyspreadofthedeadlyatom，yetbothracingtoalterthatuncertainbalanceofterrorthatstaysthehandofmankindsfinalwar.
Soletusbeginanew--rememberingonbothsidesthatcivilityisnotasignofweakness，andsincerityisalwayssubjecttoproof.Letusnevernegotiateoutoffear，butletusneverfeartonegotiate.
Letbothsidesexplorewhatproblemsuniteusinsteadofbelaboringthoseproblemswhichdivideus.Letbothsides，forthefirsttime，formulateseriousandpreciseproposalsfortheinspectionandcontrolofarms，andbringtheabsolutepowertodestroyothernationsundertheabsolutecontrolofallnations.
Letbothsidesseektoinvokethewondersofscienceinsteadofitsterrors.Togetherletusexplorethestars，conquerthedeserts，eradicatedisease，taptheoceandepths，andencouragetheartsandcommerce.
Letbothsidesunitetoheed，inallcornersoftheearth，thecommandofIsaiah--to"undotheheavyburdens，and[to]lettheoppressedgofree."And，ifabeachheadofcooperationmaypushbackthejungleofsuspicion，letbothsidesjoinincreatinganewendeavor--notanewbalanceofpower，butanewworldoflaw--wherethestrongarejust，andtheweaksecure，andthepeacepreserved.Allthiswillnotbefinishedinthefirstonehundreddays.Norwillitbefinishedinthefirstonethousanddays;norinthelifeofthisAdministration;norevenperhapsinourlifetimeonthisplanet.Butletusbegin.
