TheninthdayoftheNewYearisadayforChinesetoofferprayerstotheJadeEmperorofHeaven(天宮)intheTaoistPantheon.TheninthdayistraditionallythebirthdayoftheJadeEmperor.ThisdayisespeciallyimportanttoHokkiens.Comemidnightoftheeighthdayofthenewyear,HokkienswillofferthanksgivingprayerstotheEmperorofHeaven.OfferingswillincludesugarcaneasitwasthesugarcanethathadprotectedtheHokkiensfromcertainexterminationgenerationsago.Incense,tea,fruit,vegetarianfoodorroastpig,andpapergoldisservedasacustomaryprotocolforpayingrespecttoanhonoredperson.
