考试也是一道原题,上次出现是在雅思考试中是在2016.4.30,这道题更多的还是去描述现在人们的购物习惯到底取决于什么很显然,年龄组当然是影响人们的购物习惯的一个因素,比如不同年龄段的人需求不同;线上线下购物习惯也是不一样的。但是影响人类购物习惯其他的因素还有经济状态(financialcondition),性别(gender),时尚趋势(latestfashiontrend),品牌形象(brandimages)等等。
但是这道题而言,更高分的写法是学会“thinkoutofthebox”,应该采取的立场是“disagree”,即无法比较哪个是“more”,无法比较。所以应该body1和body2,各去描述年龄和其他因素对于购物习惯的影响,在最后一段去写因为是不同维度,所以无法比较哪个更多。

AForthepastdecadeDrEngel,alecturermenvironmentalsciencesatBritain’sOpenUniversity,hasbeencollatingexamplesofself-medicatingbehaviorinwildanimals.Sherecentlypublishedabookonthesubject.InatalkattheEdinburghScienceFestivalearlierthismonth,sheexplainedthattheideathatanimalscantreatthemselveshasbeenregardedwithsomeskepticismbyhercolleaguesinthepast.Butagrowingnumberofanimalbehaviouristsnowthinkthatwildanimalscananddodealwiththeirownmedicalneeds.
BOneexampleofself-medicationwasdiscoveredin1987.MichaelHuffmanandMohamediSeifu,workingintheMahaleMountainsNationalParkinTanzania,noticedthatlocalchimpanzeessufferingfromintestinalwormswoulddosethemselveswiththepithofaplantcalledVeronia.Thisplantproducespoisonouschemicalscalledterpenes.Itspithcontainsastrongenoughconcentrationtokillgutparasites,butnotsostrongastokillchimps(norpeople,forthatmatter;localsusethepithforthesamepurpose).Giventhattheplantisknownlocallyas“goat-killer”,however,itseemsthatnotallanimalsareassmartaschimpsandhumans.Someconsumeitindiscriminately,andsuccumb.
CSincetheVeronia-eatingchimpswerediscovered,moreevidencehasemergedsuggestingthatanimalsofteneatthingsformedicalratherthannutritionalreasons.Manyspecies,forexample,consumedirt-abehaviourknownasgeophagy(食土癖).Historically,thepreferredexplanationwasthatsoilsuppliesmineralssuchassalt.Butgeophagyoccursinareaswheretheearthisnotausefulsourceofminerals,andalsoinplaceswheremineralscanbemoreeasilyobtainedfromcertainplantsthatareknowntoberichinthem.Clearly,theanimalsmustbegettingsomethingelseoutofeatingearth.
DThecurrentbeliefisthatsoil-andparticularlytheclayinit-helpstodetoxifythedefensivepoisonsthatsomeplantsproduceinanattempttopreventthemselvesfrombeingeaten.Evidenceforthedetoxifyingnatureofclaycamein1999,fromanexperimentcarriedoutonmacawsbyJamesGilardiandhiscolleaguesattheUniversityofCalifornia,Davis.Macawseatseedscontainingalkaloids,agroupofchemicalsthathassomenotoriouslytoxicmembers,suchasstrychnine.Inthewild,thebirdsarefrequentlyseenperchedonerodingriverbankseatingclay.DrGilardifedonegroupofmacawsamixtureofaharmlessalkaloidandclay,andasecondgroupjustthealkaloid.Severalhourslater,themacawsthathadeatentheclayhad60%lessalkaloidintheirbloodstreamsthanthosethathadnot,suggestingthatthehypothesisiscorrect.
EOtherobservationsalsosupporttheideathatclayisdetoxifying.Towardsthetropicstheamountoftoxiccompoundsinplantsincreases-andsodoestheamountofeartheatenbyherbivores.Elephantslickclayfrommudholesallyearround,exceptinSeptemberwhentheyarebingeingonfruitwhich,becauseithasevolvedtobeeaten,isnottoxic.Andtheadditionofclaytothedietsofdomesticcattleincreasestheamountofnutrientsthattheycanabsorbfromtheirfoodby10-20%.
FAthirdinstanceofanimalself-medicationistheuseofmechanicalscourstogetridofgutparasites.In1972RichardWrangham,aresearcherattheGombeStreamReserveinTanzania,noticedthatchimpanzeeswereeatingtheleavesofatreecalledAspilia.Thechimpschosetheleavescarefullybytestingthemintheirmouths.Havingchosenaleaf,achimpwouldfolditintoafanandswallowit.Someofthechimpswerenoticedwrinklingtheirnosesastheyswallowedtheseleaves,suggestingtheexperiencewasunpleasant.Later,undigestedleaveswerefoundontheforestfloor.
GDrWranghamrightlyguessedthattheleaveshadamedicinalpurposethiswas,indeed,oneoftheearliestinterpretationsofabehaviourpatternasself-medication.However,heguessedwrongaboutwhatthemechanismwas.His(andeverybodyelse’s)assumptionwasthatAspiliacontainedadrug,andthissparkedmorethantwodecadesofphytochemicalresearchtotrytofindoutwhatchemicalthechimpswereafter.Butbythe1990s,chimpsacrossAfricahadbeenseenswallowingtheleavesof19differentspeciesthatseemedtohavefewsuitablechemicalsincommon.Thedrughypothesiswaslookingmoreandmoredubious.
HItwasDrHuffmanwhogottothebottomoftheproblem.Hedidsobywatchingwhatcameoutofthechimps,ratherthanconcentratingonwhatwentin.Hefoundthattheegestedleaveswerefullofintestinalworms.Thefactorcommontoall19speciesofleavesswallowedbythechimpswasthattheywerecoveredwithmicroscopichooks.Thesecaughtthewormsanddraggedthemfromtheirlodgings.
IFollowingthatobservation,DrEngelisnowparticularlyexcitedabouthowknowledgeofthewaythatanimalslookafterthemselvescouldbeusedtoimprovethehealthoflivestock.Peoplemightalsobeabletolearnathingortwo-andmay,indeed,alreadyhavedoneso.Geophagy,forexample,isacommonbehaviourinmanypartsoftheworld.ThemedicalstallsinAfricanmarketsfrequentlyselltabletsmadeofdifferentsortsofclays,appropriatetodifferentmedicalconditions.
JAfricansbroughttotheAmericasasslavescontinuedthistradition,whichgavetheirownersonemoreexcusetoaffecttodespisethem.Yet,asDrEngelpointsout,RwandanmountaingorillaseatatypeofclayrathersimilartokaolinitethemainingredientofmanypatentmedicinessoldoverthecounterintheWestfordigestivecomplaints.Dirtcansometimesbegoodforyou,andtobe“assickasaparrot”may,afterall,beastatetobedesired.
